Call for Applications: WP+D Board Members 2022-2023

About Women in Planning and Development 

For over 30 years, Women in Planning and Development (WP+D) has provided opportunities for connection and professional growth to women at all stages of their career in urban planning, development, and related fields. Our members work in government, private, and non-profit sectors across a wide range of fields including transportation, real estate, municipal planning, public policy, construction and design, community development financing, and more!

Who We Want on Our Board 

WP+D is, at its heart, a “working” board.  Everything that WP+D does is the result of the hard work and generous spirit of our all-volunteer board.  We are looking for women who are similarly invested in WP+D’s purpose, value teamwork and open communication, and are committed to centering racial equity in all aspects of WP+D’s work. 

Board members are expected to: 

  • Be prepared to commit between 2-5 hours per week to WP+D

  • Attend monthly Board meetings virtually or downtown/agreed-upon location (depending on COVID-19 situation)

  • Attend two weeknight or weekend 1/2 day planning retreats held in the Chicago area

  • Commit to actively attending and participating in most WP+D programming, such as Third Thursday WP+Drinks and professional development events

  • Carry out the specific responsibilities of their Officer/Chair position

  • Be willing and able to jump in on an as-needed basis to help handle issues that arise between board meetings (email is a primary source of communication and prompt response is required)

A Board term is considered one (1) year.  Board members have the option of staying up to two (2) terms per position and a max of four (4) terms total.  We encourage Board members to commit to staying for two terms. 

Positions Available

During the 2022-2023 term, WP+D will have seven (7) available positions on its Board of Directors: 

Treasurer | Responsible for nonprofit filings, insurance, collecting and refunding (when necessary) membership dues and fees, and reporting on the organization's assets and liabilities.

Secretary | Records, certifies, and publishes monthly meeting minutes and follows up with Board member’s task assignments

Marketing Chair | Coordinate promotion and marketing strategy for WP+D events, manage website updates, take, collect, and post event photos on social media, and draft and publish communications, including the quarterly WP+D newsletter. Proficiency and access to Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with HTML and/or web design platforms encouraged.

Programs Chair | Reserve space and promote monthly WP+Drinks with the support of other board positions, attend Drinks as WP+D's ambassador to help people feel welcome and stimulate conversation, plan and execute the WP+D Holiday Party

Professional Development (PD) Co-Chairs (2 positions) | Plan, administer and moderate monthly small networking lunches (including identifying, inviting, and following up with high-profile guests), and plan and execute two larger-scale professional development events. Given the amount of coordination required to secure guests and plan/implement events, PD falls on the higher end of the time commitment range (average 5 hours/week). 

Membership Co-Chair | Monitor the organization’s email account and website (wpdchicago.com) to resolve back-end membership issues, follow up with lapsed members, work to recruit new members (including corporate members), communicate with members about what they'd like to see from WP+D, and plan the annual membership picnic.

  • Applications close on Wednesday, July 6. 

  • If you are chosen to interview, a Board member will contact you before July 11.

  • 10-minute interviews with the Board will take place the evening of Wednesday, July 13 via Zoom.
