During the 2017-2018 term, WP+D will have 6 openings for Board of Directors positions. Being a member of the WP+D Board is a great leadership opportunity oriented toward helping women in planning and development fields flourish in Chicago. It can be pretty fun, too.
The positions available for the upcoming term include Secretary, Professional Development Co-Chairs, Programs Co-Chair, Membership Chair and Marketing Chair. Please see the descriptions of each position below, as well as an overall description of all board positions.
Who should apply?
Anyone who is a self-starter, interested in getting more involved in WP+D, and willing to work hard to see the organization thrive should apply. WP+D is an all-volunteer organization, so it is critical that the leadership be engaged and committed.
What are the responsibilities of board members?
- Attend monthly Board meetings at a downtown location.
- Attend two 1/2 day weekend or two extended weekday planning retreats held in the Chicago area.
- Commit to actively attending and participating in most WP+D programming, such as Third Thursday WP+Drinks and professional development events.
- Carry out the specific responsibilities of their officer or chair position. (details below)
- Be willing and able to jump in on an as-needed basis to help handle issues that arise between board meetings. These arrangements typically take place via email, so prompt response time over email is important.
What is the division of responsibility among board members?
President - Generally oversees the operation of the board, prepares meeting agenda, follows through with chairs' activities, holds a WP+D credit card, has the final word on organizational decisions.
Vice President - Collaborates with the President to oversee and support board operations.
Secretary (1 position, open for 2017-2018) - Takes and publishes meeting minutes and follows up with task assignments.
Treasurer - Responsible for non-profit filings, insurance, dealing with collecting and refunding (when necessary) membership dues and fees, and reporting on the organization's assets and liabilities.
Professional Development Co-Chairs (2 positions, 2 open for 2017-2018) - Plan, administer and moderate monthly small networking lunches (including identifying, inviting, and following up with high profile guests) and plan and execute two larger-scale professional development events.
Programs Co-Chairs (2 positions, 1 open for 2017-2018) - Reserve space and promote monthly WP+Drinks, attend Drinks as WP+D's ambassador to help people feel welcome and stimulate conversation, plan and execute the WP+D Holiday Party, and plan and execute at least one additional social or educational event.
Membership (1 position, open for 2017-2018) - Monitor wpdchicago.com for back-end membership issues, follow up with lapsed members, work to recruit new members (including corporate members), communicate with members about what they'd like to see from WP+D, and plan the annual membership picnic at the Pritzker Pavilion.
Marketing (1 position, open for 2017-2018) - Coordinate promotion for WP+D events, manage website updates, collect and post event photos on social media, draft and publish communications, including the quarterly WP+D newsletter.
If you are interested, please complete an application with your registration and a current WP+D board member will contact you to schedule a short interview the evening of July 10.
Spaces fill up quickly, so the earlier you sign up, the earlier your interview time is likely to be.
Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, July 5th. Board candidates must be current WP+D members to interview on Monday, July 10th. The 2017-2018 WP+D Board of Directors will be announced at our annual Membership Appreciation Picnic in July; the 2017-2018 term will begin August 2017.
